Golden Seals
Commissioned by the Super Design Bowl, we were asked to update the original California Golden Seals NHL logo.
The California Golden Seals hockey team experienced a tumultuous history throughout its existence. This former team, which bounced from city to city, deserves a sports logo that shows what the franchise could have been.
The Problem
Approaching this project, we recognized seals are not known for being intimidating and predatory animals. The biggest challenge we needed to overcome was creating an identity that fit the aggressive style of play hockey is known for with an anatomically accurate depiction of a seal.
The Solution
We aimed to create an updated California Golden Seals logo that aligns with the modern design aesthetics of other major hockey logos.
Our design focused on clean lines and aggressive features.
Sports Logo
The rules of this design competition were simple: there are no rules (outside of not copying someone else’s work). With a blank slate and full creative freedom, we pushed the envelope of how to represent a seal in a dramatic and somewhat intimidating pose.
