WF Burns Rams
Located right outside Auburn, AL, W.F. Burns Middle School has been a staple to its community for over 100 years!
Despite its longstanding tradition of academic excellence, the school has always lacked a unique and defining identity.
It was time for this to change.
The Problem
When taking inventory of the previously used W.F. Burns identities there were quite a few logos to dig through. It is common within schools to allow coaches and teachers to find logos they like on the internet and repurpose them for their use.
One of the most complicated aspects of the previous identity is how often they used logos connected with the High School they fed to (Valley HS) and not their school (W.F. Burns MS).
The Solution
When asked what has changed for W.F. Burns once the project was completed, Principal Andrew Leak answered,
“We will now be able to establish our brand that is uniquely ours without having to borrow from other sources.”
We were so proud to provide an identity the school and community could own and be proud of.
Sports Logo
The school’s leadership team provided valuable insight from the start of the project. Using a detailed mood board and confirming the school’s feedback were critical steps to capture their preferences.
The list given by the school was:
- Prefer a 3/4 profile
- Want to see both Ram horns (if possible)
- Like it to appear as if it is actively using its horns
- Would like to see an option that feels “retro”
Brand Mascot
In addition to creating a comprehensive identity system for the school, we set out to create an illustrated logo of the school’s mascot: Rambo.
Rambo is unique in that the costume has been used, historically, for both the local High School (Valley HS) and the local Middle School (W.F. Burns). In a few years, Valley HS will be combined with another local high school which will do away with the Ram mascot at the high school level. It was significant to capture the image of Rambo for the local community. He will continue to exist with W.F. Burns and remind many people of Valley HS.
